How to Keep Your Wardrobe Essentials Just Like New

We all know that getting a high-quality and well-made winter coat can be a worthwhile investment. A good winter fashion staple is usually made from expensive garments that have various technical abilities and style features to fulfil your needs in the cold weather. Wool coats are made to keep you warm and classy, down jackets protect from harsh weather forecasts, and water-repellent raincoats are best friends for the rainy season. The truth is that not many take a proper care of their winter clothes, which they actually deserve. The problem with not washing your coats is that dirt tends to build up over time and will create a dingy appearance that will ruin the look. Meanwhile, the expensive stuffing in down and feather filled outerwear are more likely to wear away and lose its functions altogether. Who wants their favourite puffy jacket to look like a deflated sleeping bag? This is why this short guide to storing, cleaning, and taking care of your winter coat is a must-read before you put your beloved coat to rest until the next season.

Wool Overcoat

First and foremost, always read the care label before you decide to do anything. Nothing will save more money and keep your nerve cells at balance than a short inspection and a properly executed care procedure. In that case, you’ll avoid any unrepairable damages that wool fibre is so liable to. Even though wool is the natural fibre spun from the soft hairs of sheep or goats, and, in theory, could be washed by hands with cool water and gentle wool wash, you are most likely to come across the label saying “dry clean only”. This is due to the fact that a nicely tailored wool coat will be designed to maintain a structured shape. Designers achieve a particular shape by employing sophisticated production processes, which include the usage of inner layers, paddings, and subtle cuts preventing stretching and keeping the coat in shape. Most commonly, wool-based compositions are blended with other fibres that are not washable, tend to shrink or just don’t mix well with other fibres when being wet. In between washings, keep your coat clean by brushing it with a soft bristle suit brush. Lay your coat flat on a hard surface and brush it, gently starting at the top and working your way down. Make sure to sweep through the armpits and the tops of pockets, which can gather lint. The most wonderful device that every winter coat owner should have is a simple lint roller. It works wonders by removing the built-up fibres and costs less than a sandwich.
There’s something else you can do in addition to the seasonal visit to your trusted dry cleaner’s in order to keep your wool coat just like new. Wool and cashmere coats need to be placed on durable wooden or velvet hangers in breathable fabric or storage bags. The key to preserving your coat during summer time is keeping it in a cool, dry, and dark place. Make sure you comfortably hang them on a sturdy hanger to avoid wrinkles. Consider placing some effective insect repellents in the closet because those tiny trouble makers love natural fibres. Never underestimate the scent of such product, because in the beginning of the next cold season you will want to start fresh.

Suede Jacket

One of the most stylish menswear staple jackets is also one of the most difficult to take care of. But you know what they say – beauty requires sacrifice, right? Suede leather is elegant, timeless, and… pretentious. It is so prone to stains that eventually you’ll find yourself feeling tempted to remove these stains at home by yourself, or worse, with some homemade remedies. However, you shall never ever under any circumstances clean it by yourself. A professional suede cleaning expert is what you need to consider right after purchasing a luxurious suede jacket. However, all the care pays off instantly as you wear it. Suede is much more supple and flexible than the full grain leather and will quickly adapt to your morphology. It’s best to store a suede jacket in the dark and away from the direct sunlight. Always make sure that the closet is not damp, because the moisture will attract the mildew that will ruin the suede irreversibly.
Never store any leather, including suede, in plastic bags, always use the fabric-based material for a storage case. Leather should be allowed to breathe and maintain its accumulation naturally. Suede is not an exception. The crucial thing when buying a suede jacket is getting the one with the water-repellent treatment. Water is suede’s biggest enemy and, in this case, you’ll avoid many unnecessary visits to your suede cleaner’s. HANDCOH created the limited-edition suede safari jacket out of the luxurious 100% lamb skin suede. In order to ensure the maximum practicality and longevity of the original colour, we protected this delicate suede with the enduring water-resistant technology.

Down Jacket

Everyone who has ever had one can’t imagine their winter without it. Puffer jackets filled with goose or duck down and padded with feathers are the most comfortable things on the planet. Preserving them right is crucial. First, give your down-filled outerwear a good washing at least once a season. Even if there’s no visibly alerting stains, the proper dry-clean session is crucial to keeping the down filling and the oils inside them in their original state. Moreover, if you find the feather sticking out, never try pulling it out but instead always push them back in. When it comes to storage, hang your down jacket outside of a stuff sack, because compression can damage down fibres inside over time. The most important tip for good down jacket maintenance is keeping it from getting soaking wet because fully drying it can be a tough and long procedure. Down jackets with water-repellent finish will make it way easier to take care of them, and rain or snow won’t do any harm.

Raincoat

The best thing about raincoats is that they’re completely seasonless. Being the owner of one means that you can work your way through the winter, survive the rainy autumn in style, and stay sharp in the cold winter evenings. Raincoats are usually made from the most durable and widely used synthetic materials such as polyester. Since its invention in the 1940s, polyester has been noticed for its resistance to wrinkles and stains and used as both fabric and filling for outerwear such as jackets and winter coats. Although polyester is resistant to moisture and liquid stains, oils can still stain it. Therefore, point out any stains that need to be removed to your dry cleaner. Always look for a finish known as “durable water repellent” (DWR), which protects the fabric from moisture, creating another barrier between you and precipitation. This finish helps the water bead up quickly, forcing it to roll off the jacket instead of slowly soak into the fabric. HANDCOH house designed a unique 2-in-1 water-resistant raincoat that has a removable lightly padded vest inside. Adding the substantial layer of warmth inside, this hybrid raincoat remains lightweight.
